Internal Funding Programs
The Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Strategic Initiatives seeks to create and maintain a supportive environment for research, creative, and scholarly endeavors. The following internal funding programs for faculty are offered by the university.
Internal Grant Programs
Administered by the Office of the Vice Provost for Research, UMass Boston annually offers the Healey Research, Public Service, and Proposal Development Grant Programs.
- Public Service Grant Program (FY25 applications accepted from March 1, 2024, through April 1, 2024)
- Joseph P. Healey Grant Program (FY25 applications accepted from March 1, 2024, through April 1, 2024)
- Proposal Development Program (FY25 applications accepted from March 1, 2024, through April 1, 2024)
- Core Utilization Pilot Grants –This program is intended to promote the use of technologies and expertise afforded by identified UMass Boston Core Facilities (Application form and acceptance dates are TBD)

Book Publication Subvention Fund
To assist UMass Boston faculty members who are asked to underwrite the cost of publishing a book through a publication subvention, the provost has established a Book Publication Subvention Fund to be managed by the VPRDGS.

The Sustainable Solutions Lab
The Sustainable Solutions Lab’s Seed Grant Program for affiliated faculty to spur increased research focused on climate justice.

College of Liberal Arts Dean's Fund for Faculty Development
The College of Liberal Arts (CLA) Dean’s Fund for Faculty Development provides funds to support faculty research and creative activity through three funds: the travel fund, the research fund and the discretionary fund.
College of Management Internal Funding Opportunities
The College of Management provides funds to support faculty research, scholarship, and professional activities through through four funds: the Commonwealth Award, the Faculty Scholarship Award, the Dean's Award for Distinguished Research, and the Faculty Fellowship Program.
UMass President's Initiatives Funds
The Office of the President of the University of Massachusetts annually announces the Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for the President’s Initiative Funds. Specifically, these funds are the Science and Technology Initiatives Fund and the Creative Economy and Social Issues Research Fund. The typical schedule is as follows:
January: Request for Concept Papers due to campus research offices
February: Concept Papers due from campus research offices to UMass President's Office
March: UMass President's Office feedback provided to campus research offices - those invited to submit full proposals are informed
April: Full proposals due to campus research offices for submission to President's Office
June: Announcement of awards

OTCV Technology Development Fund
The purpose of the Office of Technology Commercialization and Ventures Tech Development Fund is to assist faculty with the commercial development of important technologies discovered on our campuses. These are intended to move technologies to the proof of concept stage or to allow the investigator to take other critical steps to make the technology attractive for licensing or other forms of commercialization.
UMass Medical School
Center for Clinical and Translational Science (UMCCTS)
UMass Medical School / Center for Clinical and Translational Science (UMCCTS) has several funding programs that can be used to support cross-campus projects and can be found at this link: https://www.umassmed.edu/ccts/funding/. The UMass Medical School Integrated Biomarker Core also offers seed funding for transcriptomic and proteomic analyses on a rolling basis, open across the 5 UMass campuses. UMass Life Sciences Moment Fund
The LSMF Fund serves to spur inter-campus collaboration and strengthen the University’s research portfolio in clinical and translational research. By providing seed funding to outstanding faculty members, this fund facilitates the development of faculty-to-faculty networks within the University system, thereby leveraging the considerable expertise and resources that exist on the individual campuses.
