Seasonal Flu

Last Updated: September 5, 2025

Every year, the flu impacts college campuses across the country - and UMass Boston is no exception. Because we live, learn, and work closely together, getting vaccinated and practicing good prevention keeps our Beacon community healthy and strong.

Understanding Influenza (Flu)

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness that spreads quickly in communities like ours, where we live, learn, and work closely together.

Typical Flu Symptoms often appear suddenly and may include:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough or sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches, headaches, and fatigue
  • Vomiting or diarrhea (more common in children than adults)

Because flu symptoms can look a lot like COVID-19, UHS recommends taking a COVID-19 antigen test if you feel unwell. If you need care, students can book through the My Health Beacon Portal or call (617) 287-560.

Emergency Warming Signs:

Most recover with rest and care, but call 911 or seek emergency help right away if you experience:

  • Trouble breathing or shortness of breath
  • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
  • Severe dizziness, confusion, or difficulty waking
  • Seizures
  • Not urinating
  • Severe muscle pain, weakness, or unsteadiness
  • Flu symptoms that improve, then return and get worse
  • Worsening of chronic conditions (like asthma or diabetes)

How the Flu Spreads on Campus

  • Tiny droplets from coughs, sneezes, or even talking can spread the flu in classrooms, residence halls, offices, and shared spaces.
  • Less often, it spreads by touching a surface (like a desk or doorknob) and then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.

Tip: Wipe down shared study areas, keyboards, and doorknobs in common spaces!

Protecting Yourself and Others

The best defense is the annual flu shot. The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated.

On-Campus:

Off-Campus: Offered at local pharmacies (CVS, Walgreens, Osco) and at your primary care provider or community health center. Use the CDC Vaccine Finder to search by zip code.

Treatment if You Get the Flu

  • Antiviral medications (like Tamiflu) can make symptoms milder and shorten illness - but they work best if started within 2 days of getting sick. Students can call (617) 287-5660 to schedule a telehealth visit to discuss treatment if needed.
  • Rest, hydrate, and use over-the-counter medicines for comfort.
  • If you're at higher risk (chronic conditions, weakened immune system, or pregnant), students can call UHS quickly if flu symptoms start.

On-Campus Housing Tips

If you are sick while living in the Residence Halls, here's how to protect yourself and your roommate(s):

For Students Who are Sick:

  • Mask in shared spaces. Wear a high-quality mask (KN95 or equivalent) anytime you leave your room (bathroom, dining areas).
  • Use grab-and-go options instead of eating in the Dining Commons.
  • Open windows when possible and use fans to keep air moving.
  • Keep your dishes, towels, toiletries, and any other personal items separate.
  • Contact University Health Services (617-287-5660) for 24/7 medical advice or to discuss treatment options.

For Roommates of Student who is Sick:

  • Protect yourself by wearing a mask around your roommate, especially in shared spaces.
  • Limit time in the room. Take advantage of campus study areas, lounges, and outdoor spaces to reduce exposure.
  • Monitor your health and watch for symptoms. Reach out to UHS if you start feeling unwell.

For Everyone in Shared Housing:

  • Keep it clean! Wipe down doorknobs, light switches, bathroom surfaces, and shared electronics daily.
  • Wash your hands often, especially after using common areas.
  • Avoid sharing personal items.
  • If possible, rearrange beds to maximize space between them.
  • Hold off on inviting guests until illness has passed.
