Welcome!

You are a deeply valued member of our community. We care about your aspirations and take your feedback seriously on the types of help you need to achieve your goals at all stages of your faculty career.

As Boston’s premier public research university, we are committed to advancing knowledge that directly benefits our communities and beyond. Achieving Research One (R1) status from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education in 2025 reflects our dedication to impactful scholarship, innovation, and creativity. We engage students at all levels, equipping the next generation of researchers to make a meaningful difference.

Commitment to Anti-Racism & Social Justice

We are New England’s most diverse university and the country’s third-most diverse institution of higher education. We take great pride in our students’ diverse experiences and contributions, knowing that it helps prepare them and ourselves to be fully engaged contributors to a world of complex and multifaceted societies. In line with UMass Boston’s strategic plan “For the Times,” we are proud of our commitment to be an anti-racist and health-promoting institution that is attentive to faculty and student wellness. We recognize the impactful power of education in transforming not just our students’ lives but also the prospects of their families and the trajectories of their communities. Research and scholarship at UMass Boston are valued for their groundbreaking insights into domains as knowledge as well as their impact on the realities of local, national, and global communities. For more details about the university’s research profile, see Research at UMass Boston. Our research and scholarship are expansive, spanning basic, applied, and community-engaged.

Inclusive Pedagogy

Student-centeredness is a fundamental value of our teaching and research. Inclusive pedagogy, which we strive to practice, begins with the premise that our students’ life experiences are assets they bring to the learning endeavor. It is our responsibility as educators to establish meaningful pedagogical relationships with all our students and to work with them to chart academic journeys that enable each of them to envision and realize the full scope of their aspirations. Responsive teaching and deep mentoring are approaches that we adopt both in the classroom, lab, and field sites and in other co-curricular activities.

History

Our university is young, launched in 1964 with a very compelling mission. At its core, there is a fierce belief that education of the highest quality should be widely accessible, not determined by one’s economic resources.
