Biography
Jyoti Sinha teaches within the Sociology department and the Honors College at University of Massachusetts Boston. Sinha’s research and specialty has largely been with labor and gender issues, with an interest in understanding work culture and life using an emic approach.

Her immediate research interest focuses on community building within the South Asian diaspora in the northeastern region. She is the Founder and President of the South Asian Workers’ Center (SAWC), a home for the South Asian diaspora within New England. Her PhD research was conducted on women coal miners in the Jharkhand state of India, a topic she remains engaged in and is working on a book for. She has also been researching on the garment industry from Global south.
For the Honors College at UMass Boston, she has designed courses based on her research experience, such as Culture, Narratives & Migration and Women & Community Building. Sinha is working with other faculty at the school and members of the community to create a book focusing on the South Asian diaspora. Her edited volume will be titled Community Building within the Diaspora, and is based on her scholarly community work at SAWC.
