Student Tax Information
- Per IRS regulations, UMass Boston must report 'Payments Received' for qualified tuition and related expenses in box 1 on 1098T Tax Form.
- The Year 2024 1098-T Form will be mailed out and be accessed online through "WISER" by 1/31/2025.
- By Federal law, the correct Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) should be in the WISER system for the university to distribute the 1098-T form to you correctly. If you have not submitted the SSN or ITIN, please click this link UMB Student SSN Request Form to submit the form via ‘DocuSign’, which is a secure method of transmittal. Please use your UMB email account (e.g. John.Smith001@umb.edu) and password to file electronically.
- Tax year 2024 forms will be mailed to students soon. If you have received aid or income from the university, in accordance with IRS regulations, you may expect to receive a 1099, 1098-T, or 1042-S (non-resident alien). We recommend consulting with your tax preparer to understand how to handle this information.
To insure that payments are eligible to be included in Box 1 of the 1098T form for tax year 2024, please note the deadlines as below:
1. Mail, Wire Transfer (Flywire) Payments received by 5pm on 12/20/2024
2. WISER Online (Flywire) Transactions completed by 5pm on 12/30/2024
*The University will be closed for business from 12/30/2024 - 01/01/2025.
What is a 1098-T?
The 1098-T form is a Tuition Payment Statement that includes information that colleges and universities are required to issue for the purpose of determining a student's eligibility for education tax credits. This form contains the information to assist you or your parents in preparation of your federal income tax return.
When will the 1098-T form be available?
The 1098-T form will be mailed out by January 31 of each year. You may view the electronic version of the 1098-T form online through your WISER access.
Social Security Number (SSN) / Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN):
To be eligible to claim the education tax credits offered by the IRS, the law requires students to have received the Form 1098-T (Tuition Statement) from UMass Boston. This requires you to provide your social security number or taxpayer identification number to UMass Boston by the end of each calendar year.
