Fitness
The University of Massachusetts Boston's Fitness program is dedicated to the students, alumni, staff, and faculty of UMass Boston. Here you will find a friendly, healthy environment for everybody from the beginning exerciser to the well-conditioned athlete.
Whether you are new to exercise or want to take your workouts to the next level, our fitness & wellness program is confident we have the programs and fitness staff that can help you reach your goals! Please take time to check out the Beacon Fitness Center, located on the first floor of McCormack Hall.
Need Assistance?
Need a spotter? Want to use a jump rope for your workout? Having trouble finding something?
If any assistance is needed in spotting or instruction, or if you’d like to check out any of our fitness equipment to help enhance your workout, feel free to ask one of our Fitness Attendants for help.
Rules & Regulations
The Beacon Fitness Center will close for all university-dictated closings due to weather or other emergencies. For more questions, call 617.287.6786 during operating hours.
Group Fitness
Our Fitness team offers a variety of group fitness to keep our community moving in a safe and enjoyable way. Advance registration is recommended but is not required to participate. Members can register up to 24 hours prior to class start time, or in person at the BFC. Visit our Recreation Portal for class registration and further details.
All classes are held in the Beacon Fitness Center. See below for the weekly class schedule effective 9/2/25 through 12/12/25.
Due to facility closures, no classes will be held on October 13, November 11, and November 26-November 30.

Monday
Spin Express - 12:15pm with Iván
Location: BFC - Cycling Studio
Short on time? No worries - join us for our abbreviated Spin class for a brief cardio boost! This class is for anyone seeking a fun and energetic workout. See you on our short ride! Registration opens 24 hours in advance.
Hatha Yoga - 4:30pm with Joscelyn
Location: BFC - Multi Purpose Room
This class is aimed to increase flexibility, mobility, strength, and balance in a judgement free zone. Every class is designed around your needs and will leave you feeling relaxed, calm, and accomplished. All levels welcome! Registration open 24 hours in advance.
Tuesday
Vinyasa Flow - 7am with Bella
Location: BFC - Multi Purpose Room
Vinyasa Flow moves at a steady, intentional pace, linking breath with movement in seamless sequences that allow you to be fully present. As you flow, you’ll build strength, find balance, and cultivate inner peace through dynamic movement and mindful breath. Whether you're new to yoga or a seasoned practitioner, join Bella in this energizing and creative practice. Registration opens 24 hours in advance.
Total Body - 12:15pm with Sarah
Location: BFC – Multi Purpose Room
Total Body is exactly that- a full body workout that combines resistance training with cardio movements in a 30-minute circuit style format. During class we'll warm up, hit upper body, lower body, and core, and cool down with enough time to get back to class or work! Registration opens 24 hours in advance.
Wednesday
Stretch Fit - 3pm with Tupaq
Location: BFC - Multi Purpose Room
This class will focus on improving mobility, stability, and flexibility within muscles and joints to assist in movement efficiency. Through dynamic stretching, foam rolling, and mobility/stability drills, participants will increase range of motion, reduce muscle stiffness, and increase overall body performance. Registration opens 24 hours in advance.
Spin - 5pm with Iván
Location: BFC - Cycling Studio
Jump into our Spin class, perfect for all fitness levels! Get ready for a heart-pumping, beginner-friendly cycling workout. You'll do different cycling exercises for an exciting cardio boost. Personal Training Packages
Fitness Consultation: Free
- A Fitness Consultation is a one-on-one session with one of our personal trainers to set goals, learn about fitness programs, and get acclimated to exercise equipment tailored to individual needs and interests. The consultation is intended to serve as an informative and introductory session with a personal trainer while providing foundational exercise recommendations per the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or equivalent. The consultation DOES NOT include an assessment or client-specific program prescription. Those services are available only after purchasing a 1, 3, 5, or 10-session training package. Clients may opt to receive a pre-designed exercise plan to assist in getting their health & wellness journey started.
Comprehensive Assessment: $15
- A Comprehensive Assessment will provide a client with a range of physical performance markers, anthropometric measurements, and additional assessments as requested. Clients will also receive a personalized, 4-week plan to begin their health & wellness journey.
1, 3, 5, 10 Session Packages: $30, $75, $115, $215
- These 55-minute sessions will be led by our certified trainers inside of the Beacon Fitness Center. The first session in each package will be extended by 30 minutes to allow for proper assessments and intake to occur.
Buddy Training 5, 10 Session packages: $115, $215
- These 55-minute sessions will be led by our certified trainers inside of the Beacon Fitness Center. The first session in each package will be extended by 30 minutes to allow for proper assessments and intake to occur. Both clients must posses current active membership to Beacon Fitness Center to be eligible for a Buddy Package.
Personal Training FAQs
How will I pay for my Personal Training Package?
- Once our team confirms that we can schedule you with a personal trainer, an email will be sent with links to submit the remaining forms along with a link to complete your purchase.
How will I communicate with my Personal Trainer?
- Our Personal Training team uses Microsoft Teams to communicate with clients, which is available to all current UMB students/faculty/staff.
Where will my Personal Training sessions be held?
- Personal Training sessions will be held inside the Beacon Fitness Center at the location best suited to the needs of the day.
What if I need to cancel/reschedule?
- Cancellations/reschedules must be received at least 24 hours in advance. Requests with less than 24 hours are subjected to being considered a “burned” session. Full scheduling details are outlined in the Client/Trainer agreement sent via email.

Yoga on the Quad
- Thursday September 18, 4:30pm - 5:30pm. Quad Upper Lawn.
- Join our UMB Recreation team for a special outdoor Yoga class to kick off the new year! This class is open to the entire UMB community, and all levels are welcome to join. No registration is required, and all equipment will be provided. For questions contact fitness@umb.edu.
Try-A-Trainer
- Wednesday September 17, 5pm-7pm. Beacon Fitness Center.
- Tuesday October 7, 5pm-7pm. Beacon Fitness Center.
- Have you ever been curious about what having a Personal Trainer is like? Swing by the Beacon Fitness Center to find out! Our Personal Training team will be offering free 30-minute sessions on select dates. Sessions will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. For questions contact fitness@umb.edu.
UMB Moves!
- September 22 - October 31
- Step, run, jump, dance – no matter how you do it, just move! Join our updated “Step Challenge” individually or in a team to see how many steps you can collect in 6 weeks. Participants will be provided with an activity conversion chart to report their steps on a weekly basis from September 22nd to October 31st. Winners will earn exclusive UMB Rec swag and will be listed as champs in the BFC for the entire Spring 26 semester! Registration closes on Friday September 19th. Meditation 101
- Mondays September 22 - November 17, 4pm- 4:30pm. Venture Development Center, Phyllis Wheatley Hall 3rd Floor.
- Meditation has been described as transformative to both body and mind, but most of us have a hard time getting started! Join this cumulative series to explore the why, what and how of meditation, and to practice different techniques and positions, with guidance from certified meditation teacher and yogi, Maria! Sessions will share some background information about each meditation style, explaining the specific uses and benefits, then delve into practice, before wrapping with reflections and Q&A. We’ll talk about how to set-up an effective daily practice at home, and share peaceful, warm community space together. If you are unable to make the whole series, feel free to drop in for any of the sessions that align with your schedule! Advanced registration recommended. Breast Cancer Awareness Walk
- Thursday October 16, 12pm-1pm. Quad & GRACE Trail.
- Join the Department of Recreation for a walk along the harbor in honor of those we know and love who have struggled with breast cancer. The first 50 participants to register for the walk will receive FREE Breast Cancer Awareness Swag! Participants will meet on the center area of the quad beginning 11:45 am to pick up shirts and congregate as a group prior to heading out to the Harborwalk to enjoy the G.R.A.C.E. trail.
