UMass Boston’s commitment to growing its research enterprise was made particularly clear in fiscal year 2024 with record-breaking levels of research funding and expenditures.

The university reported $81.1 million in annual research funding in FY 2024, a growth of 35 percent over the past ten years. The university also reported $71.3 million in research expenditures. These levels will move the university into the R1 category on the 2025 Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

FY24: $81.1 million (4% growth) 

FY23: $78.2 million (16% growth) 

FY22: $67.7 million 

  

Research Expenditures 

FY24: $71.34 million (13% growth) 

FY23: $63.1 million (22% growth) 

FY22: $51.6 million 

 

Core Research Facilities Revenue 

FY24: $1.27 million

FY23: $570,000

FY22: $390,000

 

Strategic investments in research support, administration, and infrastructure have been instrumental in this growth.
